Police Arrest Three for Impersonating Speaker, IGP and Other Public Figures
The Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team of the Ghana Police Service has arrested three individuals for impersonating the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin; the Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno; and several other prominent personalities.
The suspects — Gideon Awudi, 25; Edem Soku, 33; and Judith Soku, 31 — allegedly created fake social media accounts in the names of these public figures to defraud unsuspecting victims.
According to a police report, the trio was also engaged in a range of cyber‑related crimes, including mobile money fraud, credit card fraud, airtime sales fraud and online sales scams across multiple social media platforms.
They were arrested at Sogakope and Dabala following a sustained intelligence‑led operation across Sogakope, Dzodze and Penyi in the Volta Region. The suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations.
Cases of impersonation have surged in recent years, particularly on social media, where fraudsters clone the accounts of influential individuals to deceive the public. These criminals often lure victims with false promises of job opportunities, recruitment into security services or lucrative business deals, demanding money under various pretences.
