Mahama must go for another term to develop Ghana like Las Vegas — A Plus
The Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has called for the removal of Ghana’s presidential term limits to allow President John Dramani Mahama to remain in office beyond two terms.
He argued that scrapping the constitutional limit would give President Mahama more time to deliver large-scale development and leave behind a lasting legacy for the country.
Article 66(2) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution bars any individual from being elected president for more than two terms.
A Plus, however, questioned the relevance of the provision, insisting it has not helped national development.
Speaking on the KSM Show, the independent lawmaker said countries that have made significant progress, such as China and the United Arab Emirates, do not strictly adhere to term limits.
“I am 100 per cent against term limits. If you have somebody who is building, you must allow the person to build,” he said.
A Plus praised President Mahama for what he described as a non-partisan approach to development, citing the continuation of projects initiated under previous governments.
He argued that with additional years in office, President Mahama could transform Ghana’s economy and infrastructure.
“Can you imagine John Mahama having another four years to build this country? You are talking about Las Vegas; John Mahama will build,” he added.
The Gomoa Central MP maintained that sovereignty rests with the people and that Ghanaians reserve the right to demand constitutional changes if they believe it serves national interest.
Meanwhile, President Mahama, who is ending his two terms in January 2029, has shot down rumours of running for a third term.
