Some SHS students watching pornography with government-provided tablets — Education Minister
The Minister for Education and Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, has revealed that some Senior High School students are misusing government-provided tablets meant for educational purposes.
The tablets were distributed under the Ghana Smart Schools Project to enhance digital learning by preloading them with educational content such as e-textbooks, interactive tools, and past questions.
However, the minister said not all devices have been properly customized, leading to misuse by some students.
“I inherited a contract with about 330.7 million US dollars, where some 1.3 million tablets were to be distributed across the country to all free senior high schools in the country so that learners can have access to digital tools.
But my attention this morning, was drawn to the fact that many of the devices are not customized, and the students are using it for other purposes, including pornography, which is not acceptable,” Haruna Iddrisu said.
He emphasized that strict measures will be put in place to ensure the tablets are used for their intended purpose.
“Government is taking a high view of it, and there must be restrictions as to what the tablets can be used for, and it should be used strictly for purposes of study,” he stated.
The minister stressed that proper deployment and supervision of digital tools are essential to train students to be globally competitive, noting the importance of digital skills in education.
