'I will sign anti-gay bill when Parliament passes it' — Mahama reiterates
President John Dramani Mahama has again said he will assent to the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025, once Parliament passes it.
The bill, initially approved by Parliament in February 2024 with bipartisan backing, proposed a three-year jail term for persons who identify as gay and five to 10 years for those who promote or advocate LGBTQ+ activities.
It stalled after a group of individuals secured an injunction from the Supreme Court to stop the then-President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, from acting on it.
A bipartisan group of MPs, led by Assin South MP Rev. John Ntim Fordjour and Ningo-Prampram MP Samuel Nartey George, reintroduced the bill in October 2025.
Speaking at the Jubilee House during a courtesy call by the Christian Council of Ghana on Tuesday, November 18, President Mahama said he supports the council’s position on the matter.
“We are completely aligned with the Christian Council in terms of your belief, and so we agree with the Speaker to relay the bill and let Parliament debate it,” he said.
“And if there are any amendments that have to be made, and the Parliament of the people of Ghana endorses and passes it, and it comes to me as President, I will sign it,” added the President.
