HeFRA shuts down Tamale Technical University Hospital over safety breaches
The Health Facilities Regulatory Agency (HeFRA) has ordered the immediate closure of the Tamale Technical University Hospital after finding that the facility was operating under unsafe conditions and with an expired license.
In a public notice, HeFRA said the hospital’s safety and infection prevention standards were “highly compromised,” posing serious risks to public health. The directive, which took effect on Friday, November 7, 2025, requires the hospital to remain closed until all critical safety concerns are resolved.
The closure followed a detailed investigation by HeFRA’s Compliance and Enforcement Directorate, prompted by intelligence reports containing video footage and photographs that revealed disturbing lapses in the hospital’s operations. A subsequent site inspection on Monday, November 3, 2025, confirmed multiple violations.
HeFRA concluded that the facility’s practices “posed serious concerns for public health and safety.”
As part of the sanctions, the agency has fined the hospital Thirty-Five Thousand Ghana Cedis (GHC 35,000) for breaching regulatory standards.
For the hospital to reopen, management must fully implement HeFRA’s recommendations to correct all identified safety and infection control failures, pay the imposed fine, and regularize its licensing status with the regulator.
In the notice signed by Acting Registrar Dr. Winfred Korletey Baah, HeFRA reaffirmed its mandate under the Health Institutions and Facilities Act, 2011 (Act 829), emphasizing its commitment to “ensuring the safety of the public through the provision of quality healthcare services.”
