Ghana expresses solidarity with Jamaica over devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa

The Government of Ghana has extended its condolences and solidarity to the Government and people of Jamaica following the devastating impact of Hurricane Melissa, a Category Five storm that struck the Caribbean nation on October 28, 2025.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday, Ghana said it “regrets the increasing death toll and widespread destruction in Jamaica caused by Hurricane Melissa.”

President John Dramani Mahama, in a diplomatic message to Jamaica’s Prime Minister, Andrew Holness, conveyed heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Jamaica, particularly to families who have lost loved ones in the disaster.

The President also wished the injured a speedy recovery and expressed sympathy to those displaced or rendered homeless by the storm.

“The Republic of Ghana stands in solidarity with Jamaica as the nation navigates through these difficult times and expresses confidence in the resilience and determination of the Jamaican people to overcome this tragedy and rebuild their beautiful country,” the statement read.

Ghana further assured Jamaica of its continued support and goodwill as the country undertakes recovery and reconstruction efforts.

Hurricane Melissa, described by meteorologists as one of the most powerful storms to ever hit Jamaica, brought torrential rains, flash floods, and destructive winds that caused extensive damage across several parishes. The storm toppled power lines, destroyed homes, and disrupted vital services, leaving thousands affected.

International rescue and relief efforts are underway as Jamaican authorities work to assess the full scale of destruction and deliver aid to affected communities.
