Joseph Kony: Dead or Alive?

Who Is Joseph Kony?

Joseph Kony is a Ugandan warlord and leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), a militia group notorious for atrocities including abduction of children, sexual slavery, and terrorizing communities in Uganda, the Central African Republic, Congo, and South Sudan.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for him in 2005, charging him with war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Whereabouts & Status: Alive, Dead, or Missing?

As of the most recent credible sources (late 2025), there is no verifiable evidence that Joseph Kony is dead. The situation is this:

Point What is known / believed
At large Kony remains a fugitive. He has not been captured, and no credible report has confirmed his death.

Hiding He is believed to be hiding in remote forest/jungle regions, likely in or near Central African Republic (CAR), possibly also Sudan or Darfur border areas.

Legal proceedings The ICC has begun hearing in absentia, meaning the confirmation of charges is being made even though Kony is not present in court. These hearings clarify the evidence and charges, but a full trial generally requires his arrest.

Fewest followers The LRA under Kony has drastically diminished in strength. Many of his commanders are dead or captured; many former fighters have defected.

Why People Think He Might Be Dead (but No Proof)

Over the years there have been rumors and claims of sightings, deaths, or Kony being severely weakened. But:

None of these claims have been definitively verified by reliable sources.

Because he’s operating in very remote, forested, often lawless areas with weak governance, confirming anything about him is difficult.

The ICC has officially declared that he is a person who “cannot be found” under its procedures, which allows them to proceed with some legal processes in his absence.

Latest Developments (2024–2025)
In February 2025, one of Kony’s wives and three children were repatriated to Uganda from the CAR, but Kony himself remains at large.

The ICC held its first confirmation of charges hearing in absentia against him in September 2025, which is not a trial but a formal step to present evidence against Kony even though he is not present.

Legal charges amount to 39 counts (war crimes, crimes against humanity) for atrocities committed in the early 2000s (notably 2002–2005 in northern Uganda).

Conclusion: Is Kony Dead?
No, there is no credible proof that Joseph Kony is dead. All reliable information indicates he is still alive (or presumed alive) but in hiding. His influence is greatly reduced, and his organization is weak compared to its peak. Legal processes are ongoing, though in absentia.
