President Mahama begins new green digital city to transform Ghana in 20years

President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled an ambitious plan to build a Green Digital City in Ghana, marking a major step toward sustainable urban development and technological innovation.

Addressing participants at the Presidential Investment Forum in Beijing, China, on Tuesday, October 13, President Mahama said an inter-ministerial committee would soon be inaugurated to undertake feasibility studies and steer the design of the transformative project.

He explained that a transaction advisor would also be appointed to lead the implementation phase of what he described as an “all-important project.”

The President disclosed that the Green Digital City would be developed in four phases over a 20-year period, with the first phase expected to commence before the end of his current tenure.

He extended a formal invitation to Chinese investors to take part in the project, stressing its central role in advancing Ghana’s digital transformation and long-term infrastructure agenda.

President Mahama said, “As part of Ghana’s transformation, we plan to establish a new green city that will straddle the three regions of Greater Accra, Volta and Eastern regions.

“I’ll soon inaugurate an inter-ministerial committee to guide the design and feasibility study of this new city. I’ll also appoint a transaction advisor to lead the process for the implementation of this all-important project.

“This will be a green, digital city and will display cutting-edge technology in urban design, planning and innovation. This city is planned to be a 20-year project executed in four phases. My expectation is that the first phase will commence before my tenure of office runs out. I invite our Chinese colleagues to be a part of this all-important project.”

The proposed Green Digital City is expected to serve as a model for sustainable development in Africa, blending smart infrastructure, eco-friendly technology, and modern urban planning to support Ghana’s vision of a greener, digitally connected future.
