How KGL partnership boosted NLA digital revenue from GHS20m in 2020 to GHS157m in 2024

The National Lottery Authority (NLA) has recorded its most dramatic revenue growth in history, with earnings from its partnership with KGL Technology Limited surging from GHS20 million in 2020 to GHS157 million in 2024.

The jump represents a remarkable 685% increase in just four years, cementing the KGL collaboration as the NLA’s most successful public-private partnership to date. Initially signed to digitize the Authority’s flagship 5/90 lottery, the deal has not only revitalized the NLA’s revenue streams but also transformed its financial contribution to the state.

The partnership began in 2020 with a modest GHS 20 million licensing agreement, following years of failed attempts to digitize the lottery through projects such as “Mobi Games” and “Mobile 5/90.” Since then, renegotiated terms tied to KGL’s performance have seen contributions rise to GHS 25 million in 2021, GHS 50 million in 2022, and GHS 96 million in 2023, culminating in the record-breaking GHS 157 million for 2024.

The 2024 financials underscore the scale of the transformation. KGL’s digital operations generated GHS 3 billion in revenue, out of which GHS 2 billion was paid to winners and GHS 87 million in taxes went to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

An NLA insider explained the significance of the figures: “For the NLA to make GHS 157 million through its traditional operations, it would need to sell a gross amount of GHS 950 million. The highest revenue the NLA has ever achieved on its own was GHS 402 million in 2017. This partnership isn’t just an addition; it’s a transformation.”

The success of the KGL-NLA model illustrates the power of public-private partnerships in driving innovation. By leveraging private sector expertise and investment in technology, the state gaming authority has unlocked unprecedented value while avoiding the costs and risks of building such systems in-house.
