World News Day: ‘Support the media to keep you informed’ — PRINPAG urges public

David Tamakloe, President of PRINPAG

The Private Newspaper and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) has appealed to Ghanaians to celebrate and support the media’s efforts to provide accurate and timely information

PRINPAG said publishers continue to face limited revenue opportunities, harassment, intimidation and attacks despite their vital role in promoting democracy and holding power to account.

The association noted that without a strong press, society risks misinformation, disinformation and disorder.

In a statement issued on Sunday, September 28, marking the world news day, PRINPAG President David Tamakloe called on government, corporate bodies and donors to “invest in the sector.”

He particularly stressed the area of “capacity building and technology, to ensure a resilient and independent media that serves the public interest and strengthens our democracy.”

The association commended individuals and institutions that support media houses through advertising and other means.

It further urged journalists must also embrace constructive criticism and uphold high ethical standards to maintain public trust.

World News Day 2025: PRINPAG'S OFFICIAL STATEMENT*

28th September 2025
On behalf of the Private Newspaper and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG), we extend warm greetings to all Ghanaians on World News Day. This day reminds us of the crucial role news publishers play in our country , and the challenges they continue to face.

In Ghana, publishers grapple with limited revenue opportunities and threats to press freedom. Yet, they remain gatekeepers of information, guardians against misinformation, disinformation and malinformation, champions of diverse views, and defenders of free speech. Without their work, our society would risk disorder.

We urge the public to celebrate and support the media, whose efforts shape public discourse and hold power accountable. We commend individuals and institutions that continue to invest in the media through advertisements and other support, helping sustain access to accurate and timely information.

As we mark this day, we also recognize the need for constant improvement. Publishers must embrace constructive criticism, uphold ethical standards, and adopt technology to strengthen services and maintain public trust.

We call on government, corporate entities, and donors to invest in the sector, particularly in capacity building and technology, to ensure a resilient and independent media that serves the public interest and strengthens our democracy.

Thank you.
Signed,
*David Tamakloe*
President, PRINPAG
