Central region is unfairly suffering from galamsey activities in the Eastern region — Gabriella Tetteh
Central Regional Communication Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Gabriella Tetteh, has accused illegal miners in the Eastern Region of causing severe water shortages in parts of the Central Region.
She said the destructive mining in Eastern Region rivers has polluted key water sources that supply many Central Region communities.
According to her, the people suffering the most are not miners and have no role in the devastation affecting their livelihoods.
Speaking on Accra-based Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on Monday, September 22, Ms. Tetteh described the situation as a grave injustice.
“What we are seeing in Central Region is of no fault of the indigenous people. It is very, very unfair to us, and I expect that the Eastern Regional Security Council and the District Chief Executive of Ayensuano will start working on how to get rid of those people on that stream,” she said.
She explained that the Kwanyako Water System, which supplies water to at least 13 districts in the Central Region, has been heavily affected.
Communities including Winneba, Gomoa, Agona, and Effutu have reportedly been grappling with discoloured, unsafe water for weeks.
“If you open the taps in Winneba today, the water that will come out is like milky clay—through no fault of these people. What has happened is totally unfair to us,” she lamented.
The NDC communicator warned that residents would not hesitate to mount public pressure if authorities in the Eastern Region fail to act.
She called on regional and district security councils to urgently flush out miners working around the source of the Ayensu River.
