Ga Traditional Council blocks planned celebration of Igbo Yam Festival in Accra

The Ga Traditional Council has strongly objected to the planned celebration of the 2025 Igbo New Yam Festival in Accra, cautioning that the event poses a threat to peace and security within the Ga State.

In a letter signed by its Registrar, Evelyn Amewotse, the Council expressed alarm over an invitation and flyer circulating on social media promoting the festival, which is being spearheaded by Eze Dr. Amb. Chukwudi Jude Hienetu under the theme “2025 Ibo Day in Ghana – New Yam Festival.”

The event is slated for Sunday, September 21, 2025, at the Efua Sutherland Children’s Park.

The Council reminded the public of an earlier warning it issued on July 9, 2025, advising Eze Hienetu against organising cultural or traditional ceremonies that sought to import Igbo practices into the Ga State. It said the decision to move ahead with the festival in defiance of this directive risked stirring avoidable tensions.

“HRM King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II has directed me to write to inform you and also seek your assistance by putting the above programme to a halt as soon as possible,” the Registrar stressed in the letter.

The Ga Traditional Council has therefore called on the appropriate state authorities to step in and stop the planned celebration, insisting that preserving harmony in the Ga State must take precedence over activities that could undermine security.
