Calm restored at Tamale Technical University following violent clash — Police

The Ghana Police Service says it has restored order at the Tamale Technical University (TaTU) after a violent confrontation between students and law enforcement officers during a protest over rising fees and a controversial “developmental levy.”

The students, numbering about 500, reportedly gathered at the university’s administration block on Tuesday, September 16, to demand a halt to persistent fee hikes and the collection of the levy, which they claim has not translated into any visible campus improvements.

According to a police statement signed by Regional Public Relations Officer C/Inspector Luckman Niendow Alhassan, the demonstrators blocked roads and set vehicle tyres ablaze at the school’s main entrance and other key points, prompting a police response led by Superintendent Richard Lantei Odartey.

“The students became aggressive upon seeing the police and started pelting stones which resulted in three students sustaining injuries as well as three police officers who are currently receiving treatment at the hospital,” the release stated in part.

The police noted that no school property was destroyed during the incident.

“The team managed to bring the situation under control and restored calm to the school. Meanwhile, a temporary deployment is stationed on the grounds to avert any recurrence,” the statement announced.
