We need about GHS13.8 million to provide streetlights across Kumasi — Mayor
The Mayor of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi, says the Assembly requires about GHS13.8 million to properly light up the city.
He explained that providing adequate streetlights is critical to improving night-time visibility and boosting security in the Ashanti Regional capital.
Speaking in an interview with JoyNews on Monday, September 8, Mr. Ofori-Agyeman Boadi disclosed that President John Dramani Mahama had directed part of the Assembly’s Common Fund allocation to be used for the project.
“As we speak, I need to raise about GHS13.8 million to illuminate the city of Kumasi, provide streetlights so that we would have good visibility at night, to improve on security management of our metropolis. President John Mahama has directed that part of our share of the Common Fund be used for that,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Mayor revealed that the KMA is battling debts of about GHS300 million, including over GHS142 million in judgment debts.
He blamed the financial challenge on what he described as irresponsible contract management by past administrations, especially in the waste management sector, where contracts were terminated without due process.
