Former CJ Torkornoo to challenge her removal in court
The legal team of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has announced plans to challenge the recommendation that led to her removal from office.
The Committee of Inquiry, constituted by President John Dramani Mahama to probe petitions of alleged misbehaviour, submitted its report on Monday, September 1, 2025.
The committee found the Chief Justice guilty of misconduct and advised her dismissal, a decision that has since generated heated debate about judicial independence.
But her lead counsel, former Attorney-General Nii Ayikoi Otoo, insists the process was unfair and must be tested in court.
Speaking in an interview on Saturday, September 6, 2026, he said the former Chief Justice deserves the chance to defend her integrity.
“This is an option we are looking for to get the records straight. When Dr. Danquah went to court to talk about Re and Akoto, and that there was the abuse of a fundamental human right, people did not take him seriously. But today, people are praising him for having fought that good fight. So, we will go to court at the right time,” Mr. Otoo said.
A potential legal battle is expected to raise fundamental constitutional questions, including the extent of presidential authority and the protections available to judicial office holders under Ghana’s democracy.
