Kumasi: Residents stop family from burying corpse near river in Santasi

Residents of Santasi Apire in the Kumasi Metropolis of the Ashanti Region have stopped a family from burying their seven-year-old child near a river in the community.

The incident occurred on Saturday, September 6, 2025, when the family dug a grave close to the water body in an attempt to conduct the burial. Alarmed by the move, residents quickly intervened, insisting that the site was not an approved cemetery.

A resident, Mr. Bernard, who led the youth to prevent the burial, explained that the family had not sought approval from any authority before proceeding. He added that the residents filled the hole to safeguard the river from contamination.

The family has since begun discussions with community leaders to secure permission for burial at an appropriate location.

The episode underscores the need for compliance with community regulations and the protection of vital environmental resources.
