Chonke Paramount Chief appeals for safe water, regional hospital amid typhoid outbreak
The Paramount Chief of the Chonke Traditional Area, Daasebre Atamafowiese Bonja II, has appealed to government to urgently provide the people of Krachi East in the Oti Region with safe drinking water and a regional hospital.
His call comes in the wake of a recent outbreak of typhoid fever in parts of the region, with Krachi East identified as one of the hardest-hit areas.
During a visit by the Oti Regional Minister, several Municipal and District Chief Executives, and a medical team from Greater Accra and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Daasebre Atamafowiese Bonja II expressed deep concern about the community’s lack of potable water.
“The cause of this typhoid fever in Krachi East is our lack of good drinking water. We live around the Oti River, but rarely get proper water. If the government is ready to curb this, we need good drinking water. A regional hospital is also very important in this discussion. We have a vast land available and ready to make it available for the hospital,” he said.
The team of expert doctors assured the chiefs and people that they would conduct thorough investigations into the outbreak, identify the root causes, and recommend measures to prevent future occurrences.
