Professor Agyemang Takes the Helm as Chair of Accounting and Finance at University of Eswatini
Professor Joseph Kwasi Agyemang, Professor of Accounting Sciences at the University of South Africa (UNISA) and the University of Eswatini, and the first person in the world to attain three unique PhDs in accounting, has been appointed Chair/Head of the Accounting and Finance Department at the University of the Kingdom of Eswatini.
In his new role, Professor Agyemang is tasked with providing academic leadership to foster a vibrant and diverse culture focused on teaching, research and external engagement. He will inspire staff and students, align departmental activities with university goals, promote research excellence and oversee external engagement both locally and internationally.
Reflecting on his historic achievement and how it has prepared him for this leadership role, Professor Agyemang said: "My academic milestone has equipped me to manage the department effectively, stay abreast of emerging trends in accounting and finance education, and guide programme development and research. This achievement could also help the department secure industry support or attract research grants for the University of Eswatini”.
On his immediate priorities and long-term goals for the department, Professor Agyemang shared that, guided by the African proverb that “strength lies in unity”, his first priority is fostering collaboration within the department. “I will strengthen existing programmes, enhance teaching quality, pursue research, develop new programmes aligned with industry needs, and engage with the community and industry through workshops, training, and academic collaborations”, he said.
He identified several key challenges in his new role, including securing funding, managing resources, fostering collaboration, retaining talent, keeping up with technology, upholding ethical standards and balancing research, teaching and administrative duties. Addressing these challenges, he explained, is essential for building a thriving, innovative academic community. "We will promote collaboration, mentorship and professional growth, while providing access to advanced technologies and training to keep faculty at the forefront of research”, he added.
Looking ahead, Professor Agyemang reflected on the potential impact of his appointment and academic achievements on the next generation of accountants and academics. “My appointment and achievements will inspire future accountants and academics in Eswatini and beyond, spark youth interest in accounting, and bring global expertise to the University of Eswatini, enhancing its reputation and attracting top talent”, he noted.
