A study published in Circulation Research (Jan 31, 2025) examined vascular function in women with late-onset menopause (age ≥ 55) versus those with normal-onset (45–54).

Women with late-onset menopause exhibited significantly better endothelial (blood vessel) function 24% worse than premenopausal women compared to 51% worse in the normal group. The benefit persisted at least five years post-menopause and was linked to better mitochondrial health and favorable lipid profiles.

This supports the idea that longer exposure to estrogen confers cardiovascular protection a hypothesis reinforced by expert commentary.

Brain Aging & Cognitive Health
A University of Auckland study (mid‑2025) looked at over 1,000 postmenopausal women and found that those with longer reproductive spans (menstruation starting earlier and menopause later) showed slower brain aging on MRI. Early menopause (before 45) also has socioeconomic impacts one study found it reduced time spent in employment by the mid-50s by about 9 percentage points. Psychological symptoms during menopause (e.g., mood issues) further reduced full-time employment rates.

Emerging Interventions:
Can Menopause Be Delayed?
Advanced therapies such as rapamycin (an anti-aging drug) and ovarian tissue cryopreservation may extend ovarian hormone production, potentially delaying menopause. However, risks including elevated breast cancer and blood clot risks along with ethical concerns, temper the enthusiasm for these methods.
