Police announce road closures for state funeral of helicopter crash victims on Friday

The Ghana Police Service will close and divert traffic on some roads in Accra on Friday, August 15, for the state funeral of the victims of the August 6 military helicopter crash.

The ceremony, to be held at Independence Square, will honour eight people, including two cabinet ministers and three servicemen, who died in the crash.

In a statement dated August 14 and signed by the Police Assistant Commissioner of Public Affairs, Grace Ansah-Akrofi, the Police said the roadblocks are to ensure public safety and smooth traffic flow during the event.

The roads to be closed include, the 28th February Road from CEPS Traffic Light to Castle Road Junction, the Osu Cemetery Traffic Light on Lokko Street, Castle Road from AU Circle to Osu Cemetery Traffic Light and the Starlet 91 Road at the Ministries Traffic Light.

The diversions, according to the police will affect drivers from La, Labone and Osu heading to the Central Business District will use Salem Avenue to Oxford Street, and Traffic from Lokko Street to Castle Road will be rerouted through Ajumaku and Oxford streets in Osu.

Others include vehicles from Atta Mills High Street will be diverted at CEPS Traffic Intersection onto Liberia Road towards the National Theatre and drivers from AU Circle to Castle Road via Osu Cemetery will use Abdul Diouf and King Hassan Roads to link Abdul Nasser Road near the Ghana Institute of Journalism.

The police further announced that only vehicles with RED VVIP stickers will be allowed into Independence Square.

Parking will be available at the State House forecourt, International Conference Centre, Access Bank car park, Osu Cemetery car park, Accra Sports Stadium, Ministries area, Ministry of Food and Agriculture car park, Marine Drive Football Park, and Afua Sutherland car park.

The Police further cautioned that illegally parked vehicles will be towed and urged drivers to plan ahead and cooperate with security personnel on duty.
