Ghana, Our Beloved Nation Mourns: The Loss of Eight Lives of Great Patriots

"Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return." - Quran 2:156

As a nation, we stand wrapped in grief since the incident of this air accident as we mourn the tragic loss of eight distinguished public servants whose lives we anticipate to continue beyond a journey in a military helicopter. As Coordinator of the Zongo Caucus UK and Ireland Chapter of the National Democratic Congress, I extend our deepest condolences to our beloved nation, His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, and the bereaved families of these remarkable souls who have returned to Allah whilst serving their country.

The Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter, carrying these dedicated servants to launch the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme in Obuasi, became their final journey of service. Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed were among the victims of the crash in the southern Ashanti region, alongside six other patriots who gave their lives in service to Ghana.

Dr. Edward Omane Boamah - Defence Minister: A medical doctor who graduated from the University of Ghana Medical School and held a master's degree in health policy planning and Financing from the London School of Economics. As a young man, he demonstrated extraordinary leadership as President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS). His service to humanity began early when he was part of the Medical Rescue Team during the "May 9, 2001, Stadium Disaster" in Accra. Dr. Boamah championed child online protection and addressed cyber threats by establishing the National Computer Emergency Response Team. He was preparing to release a book titled "A Peaceful Man in an African Democracy" about former President John Atta Mills.

Hon. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed - Environment Minister: Born on 14 December 1974, this son of the Northern Region was a trained teacher who held a teacher's certificate A from Tamale College of Education. He held a Master of Arts in Development Studies and qualifications in international relations and development planning. In his final interview, this devoted Muslim revealed his philosophical approach to life: "I don't think of death. Material things don't shape my perspective. I live by principles and purpose". He championed environmental sustainability and was committed to Ghana's green transition.

Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna - Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, whose dedication to national security served Ghana's peace and stability.

Dr. Samuel Sarpong - Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, whose political wisdom and guidance strengthened our democratic institutions.

Samuel Aboagye - Former NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Obuasi East, who dedicated his life to grassroots political development.

Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala - A distinguished pilot whose service to the Ghana Armed Forces exemplified military excellence.

Flying Officer Malin Twum-Ampadu - A dedicated airman whose commitment to duty reflected the highest ideals of military service.

Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah - A faithful soldier whose service embodied the Ghana Armed Forces' motto of dedication and sacrifice.

In this moment of profound sense of loss and emotional instability, we find solace in the eternal wisdom of our Creator. The Holy Quran reminds us: "…And give good tidings to the patient, Who, when disaster strikes them, say, 'Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.' Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy. And it is those who are [rightly] guided…." (Quran 2:155-157)

The Bible also comforts us: "The Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord." (Job 1:21) and "Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning." (Psalm 30:5)

These eight souls were gifts from Allah to our nation. Through their dedicated service, Ghana benefited immensely from their wisdom, leadership, and unwavering commitment to national development. Dr. Boamah's medical expertise saved countless lives, whilst his technological innovations protected our children online. Minister Murtala's environmental vision promised a sustainable future for generations yet unborn and the countless lives he has empowered.

We can tame our grief with the belief that these extraordinary lives, these patriots answered the highest calling - service to humanity and nation. Their legacy lives on in every life they touched, every policy they crafted, and every vision they pursued for Ghana's advancement.

Dr. Boamah's dedication to child protection online will continue safeguarding our young ones. His commitment to Ghana's defence ensures our security framework remains strong. Minister Murtala's environmental advocacy will inspire future generations to cherish and protect our natural heritage with sincerity. Their colleagues' contributions to security, politics, and military service have strengthened Ghana's democratic foundations.

This tragedy reminds every office holder of the sacred trust placed in their hands. As The Holy Quran teaches: "O you who believe! Fulfil your contracts." (Quran 5:1) Every role in public service holds the lives and wellbeing of countless citizens. The proper execution of duty carries profound responsibility, for failure can have consequences we cannot foresee until they manifest.

Let this moment inspire all who serve to approach their duties with the same dedication these eight souls demonstrated. Their lives remind us that true service requires sacrifice, and genuine leadership demands putting the nation's welfare above personal comfort.

From the Zongo communities across the United Kingdom and Ireland, we extend our heartfelt condolences to President Mahama, whose leadership burden grows heavier with this incident. We pray Allah grants him strength and wisdom during these challenging times.

To the families of our departed patriots, we share in your pain whilst celebrating the honour of having such dedicated souls as your loved ones. The Quran assures us: "And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose." (Quran 65:3)

As one Ghanaian community spanning continents, let us unite in prayer and purpose. Whether we call upon Allah, through Jesus, or by other names for the Almighty, our Creator understands our pain and will provide comfort in His infinite mercy.

The Bible reminds us: "Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted." (Matthew 5:4) In our Islamic tradition, we know Allah's Mercy encompasses all things, and these servants who died in service to humanity shall find their reward with their Maker.

Ghana must forge ahead with renewed unity and purpose. These eight lives were not lost in vain if we honour their memory through continued service to our beloved nation. Let their dedication inspire us to excellence in whatever capacity we serve - whether in Ghana or the diaspora.

From London to Dublin, from Accra to Tamale, let every Ghanaian recommit to the values these patriots embodied: service, sacrifice, and unwavering love for Ghana. Their deaths remind us that life is precious and uncertain, but service to humanity gives life eternal meaning.

May Allah grant our departed heroes Jannatul Firdaws and may the Almighty comfort all who mourn their passing. May He grant our President wisdom, our nation unity, and our people strength to continue building the Ghana these heroes envisioned.

"Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest." (Quran 13:28)

On behalf of the entire Zongo Caucus, UK and Ireland Chapter of the NDC, we stand with Our Beloved Gahana in this hour of grief and prayer.
