Sagnar Naa enskins Registrar of TaTU as chief of Shigu traditional community

The Paramount Chief of the Sagnarigu Traditional Area, Sagnar Naa Ambassador Yakubu Abdulai, has enskinned the Registrar of Tamale Technical University (TaTU), Alhaji Yakubu Iddrisu, as the Chief of the Shigu Traditional Community.

The community falls under the Sagnarigu Traditional Area in the Sagnarigu Municipality of the Northern Region.

The coronation ceremony, which took place on June 2, 2025, conferred upon Alhaji Iddrisu the chieftaincy title “Shi-Naa.” He becomes the latest traditional leader to join the ranks of the Sagnarigu Traditional Council.

Alhaji Iddrisu, who has served as Registrar of TaTU since 2019 following his confirmation by the university’s Governing Council, is widely recognized for his significant contributions to the institution’s growth and development. He is notably the first Registrar of the university after its transition from Tamale Polytechnic to Technical University status.

Prior to the enskinment, Sagnarigu Naa Bapri presented the traditional cola nuts—known as the "cola of Sagnarigu Shi-Naa"—to signal his endorsement of Alhaji Iddrisu’s installation following the vacancy of the Shigu chieftaincy.

Acceptance Speech
In his acceptance speech, the newly enskinned Shi-Naa expressed his gratitude to the Sagnarigu and Shigu Traditional Councils for the honour bestowed on him. He pledged to serve the community with dedication and inclusiveness.

“During my reign as Shigu Naa, I will work with the chiefs and elders, religious leaders, women groups and youth groups to ensure peace, harmony, tranquility and development,” he said.

Reflecting on his professional journey, he noted:

“As the Registrar of Tamale Technical University, I have been responsible for the overall operations of the university and therefore have excellent understanding of the committee/board system of administration.
“I played a leading role in the transitioning of the then Tamale Polytechnic to a Technical University and continue to lead the administrative front of the university by ensuring good information flow and excellent policy formulation and implementation at all levels of its governance.
“I wish to call on everybody within the Shigu Traditional Area to endeavor to contribute in their own small way to ensure that the Shigu Traditional Area remains attractive for investors and development. My doors shall be open to all in the discharge of my traditional duties, and I shall lead without discrimination,” he stated.

He also acknowledged his long-standing support for university leadership:

“Over the years, I have supported Rectors and Vice Chancellors to implement their individual visions for the development of the university,” he stressed.

Management and staff of TaTU who attended the ceremony praised the residents of the Shigu community and the traditional council for placing their trust in the newly enskinned chief. They pledged their full support to Shi-Naa in fulfilling his traditional responsibilities and spearheading development in the area.
