The Overview and Perspective of Bethel Prayer Ministry International (1995–2025)
Bethel Prayer Ministry International (BPMI), established in 1995 under divine instruction, has journeyed through thirty remarkable years of Christian ministry. This spiritual ministry was founded by the late Bishop Dr Paul Owusu Tabiri, a dynamic Evangelist, Prophet, and Apostle, has continued to grow and evolve through various leadership phases while remaining committed to the great mandate of the Lord Jesus Christ. The aim of this overview is to provide a critical reflection on BPMI's history, spiritual trajectory, and the lasting impact it has made within and beyond Ghana, as well as its alignment with the biblical principles that define true Christian ministry. The account evaluates the three major leadership eras: the foundational leadership of Bishop Dr Paul Owusu Tabiri (1995–2005), the chairmanship of Apostle Samuel Gyamfi (2006–2016), and the strategic vision and stewardship of Apostle Paul Adu Newman (2016–present).
Bishop Dr Paul Owusu Tabiri’s Foundational Mandate (1995–2005)
The call of Bishop Dr Paul Owusu Tabiri into full-time ministry in 1988 marked a major turning point in Ghana’s Christian evangelistic history. While on a business trip to the United States, God called him as an Evangelist, Prophet, and Apostle, compelling him to return to Ghana and begin the Bethel Prayer Camp under the leadership of the Church of Pentecost. On 7th July 1990, the prayer camp commenced with just seven people, a biblical symbol of divine perfection and beginning.
In June 1995, the Lord directed him to start Bethel Prayer Ministry International (BPMI), becoming its first Chairman. His ministry was anchored in what Professor Kingsley Larbi identified as the five-fold Gospel of Jesus Christ:
- The Gospel of salvation and reconciliation
- The Gospel of sanctification and righteousness
- The Gospel of divine healing, deliverance, and the manifestation of the Holy Spirit’s power
- The Gospel of prosperity, material and financial blessings
- The Gospel of divine judgment and eternal life in Heaven
Under his leadership, BPMI experienced tremendous spiritual and physical expansion. Over 350 Assemblies were planted, more than 300 pastors ordained, and a vocational school established in Sunyani, empowering people spiritually and economically. His book This is your Breakthrough (2004) became a spiritual arsenal for effectual warfare and personal deliverance, introducing concepts such as the “five Bs”—Breaking, Binding, Blasting, Brandishing, and Bombing (in the name of Jesus Christ), symbolising levels of spiritual engagement.
Apostle Samuel Gyamfi’s Chairmanship (2006–2016)
Following Bishop Dr Paul Owusu Tabiri’s call to glory, Apostle Samuel Gyamfi stepped into a challenging role as the second Chairman of Bethel Prayer Ministry International. Despite facing issues of disloyalty and internal organisational strain, he remained focused on training, soul-winning, and Church consolidation.
Under his leadership, nearly 100 pastors, many of whom had limited formal theological training were encouraged and supported to receive pastoral and ministerial education, thus strengthening the Church's spiritual depth and leadership structure. Apostle Samuel Gyamfi also collaborated with Evangelist Thomas Aboraah of the Royal Evangelical Group to organise impactful evangelistic outreaches, revive dormant Assemblies, and plant new Assemblies both in Ghana and abroad. His legacy is one of endurance, unity, and soul-consciousness.
Apostle Paul Adu Newman’s Visionary Leadership (2016–Present)
Apostle Paul Adu Newman’s era has been marked by strategic vision, humility, and administrative prudence. Inheriting a church facing financial and infrastructural challenges, Apostle Paul Adu Newman made a deliberate decision to avoid international travels to save costs for the Church, an unusual but powerful testament of selflessness and mission-focused leadership.
His vision is anchored in continuing the original five-fold Gospel mandate left by Bishop Dr Paul Owusu Tabiri, with a renewed emphasis on:
- Church planting
- Evangelism and soul-winning
- Strengthening existing Assemblies
- Securing permanent worship spaces
Most importantly, Apostle Newman has re-emphasised the core message of the Gospel: repentance, holiness, and transformation. It is therefore not surprising that the theme for Bethel Prayer Ministry International (BPMI) this year is Jesus Christ is Coming Soon. Repent!
A critical message he never ceases to preach, yet which is now rarely emphasisd in contemporary pulpits is the message of repentance, the same message with which John the Baptist (Matthew 3:1 ff) and Jesus (Mark 1:15) launched their ministries: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Apostle Paul Newman is emphasising that without repentance, there is no genuine transformation. His preaching has challenged lukewarm and lackadaisical members and sinners to turn from their evil ways to live lives of holiness, commitment and purpose.
In an age where many churches overly focus on material prosperity, Bethel Prayer Ministry International remains committed to preaching the full counsel of God, including repentance and preparation for eternity.
Kingdom-Oriented Leadership and a Non-Personal Agenda
Throughout the 30-year journey, Bethel Prayer Ministry International (BPMI) has modelled the ideal of Kingdom-centred ministry. This aligns with the teachings of John C. Maxwell, who rightly observed that “The key to passion is purpose. We must run with purpose, not aimlessly.” Leaders of BPMI have served as middle managers under God’s leadership—committed to the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18–20), passionate about soul-winning, discipleship, the care of the poor, and the holistic development of people.Rather than seeking personal aggrandisement, the Ministry has:
- Trained and empowered spiritual leaders
- Established educational and vocational institutions
- Evangelised across regions and nations
- Advocated holiness, righteousness, and spiritual warfare
- Upheld the relevance of repentance as a foundational Christian principle.
What is the Way Forward?
Bethel Prayer Ministry International should emulate the example set by its founder, Bishop Dr Paul Owusu Tabiri, who selflessly dedicated all he had to the propagation of the gospel and church planting. The current leadership is encouraged to build upon the legacy he left by working towards increasing the number of assemblies, rather than allowing those established by the founder to diminish or collapse.
In addition, the leadership should sustain the founder’s soul-winning initiatives by promoting vibrant open-air crusades and conventions, instead of organising major programmes such as Christmas Conventions and Easter events within the church premises.
Furthermore, it is advisable for the leadership to empower church elders, deacons, and deaconesses to establish home cell groups in various communities. These home cells should be nurtured with the vision of developing them into full assemblies as they grow and mature.
Moreover, the leadership may consider exploring the possibility of paying tithes from the headquarters to a church that existed prior to the establishment of Bethel Prayer Ministry International. Although this may seem unconventional, this gesture could serve as a powerful model of shared spiritual accountability and foster divine breakthrough for the ministry.
May the next decades find Bethel Prayer Ministry International even more aligned with God’s heartbeat, focused on eternity, and unwavering in fulfilling its heavenly mandate.
As Bethel Prayer Ministry International marks its 30th anniversary and reflects on the 20th year since the founder’s passing, the Church’s unwavering commitment to the mission of Christ remains evident. It has not been a ministry of self-promotion, luxury, or personal enrichment. Instead, Bethel Prayer Ministry International has emerged as a Church devoted to advancing the Kingdom of God, equipping the saints, transforming lives, and preparing a holy people for the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. In a generation where many have deviated from the foundational truth of repentance and holiness, BPMI continues to preach the full Gospel, refusing to compromise its divine mandate. Its leaders have modelled servant leadership, accountability, and vision-driven purpose—hallmarks of a true apostolic church. As the Church marks its 30th anniversary and looks to the future, it must continue to prioritise soul-winning, church planting, spiritual discipline, social responsibility, and intercession for all and sundry. Bethel Prayer Ministry International must remain a Church with a clear kingdom focus that is driven by purpose, empowered by the Holy Spirit, and committed to finishing well.
Long live Bethel Prayer Ministry International!
May the Holy Spirit continue to lead BPMI, in the name of Jesus Christ.
To God be all the glory. Amen.
