In software development, they shape and drive use case modeling, requirements engineering, domain-driven design, architectural choices, data schemas, and integration patterns.
APPLICATIONS TO THE HEALTHCARE SECTOR:
In the healthcare sector, for instance, the consequences of incomplete or inaccurate workflow modeling are both immediate and profound. Misconfigured workflows in clinical systems can cause delays in diagnostics, errors in medication ordering, or breaches of patient confidentiality. The entire value of an Electronic Health Record (EHR) system, a Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS), or a patient triage module depends on how well the underlying workflows mirror the real-life clinical pathways. Moreover, industry standards such as HL7, FHIR, and ICD coding structures are workflow-sensitive. Any deviation in workflow logic can violate compliance protocols and threaten patient safety.

From a technical perspective, the path from business process to executable code traverses several abstraction layers.
