Petition to Honorable Ahmed Ibrahim (MP), Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs
Dear Honorable Ahmed Ibrahim,
Subject: Urgent Intervention in the Selection Process for MMDCE in Atiwa West
We, the undersigned members and stakeholders of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Atiwa West, write to express our deep concerns regarding the ongoing disputes and irregularities in the selection process for the Municipal or District Chief Executive (MMDCE) position in our constituency. These issues threaten the integrity of the process and the unity of our party, and we respectfully seek your urgent intervention to ensure transparency, fairness, and adherence to democratic principles.
At the heart of the controversy is the Constituency Chairman, Mr. Johnson Amo, who has been accused of blocking the application of Mr. Julius, an executive member, from being forwarded to Koforidua for vetting. This action has raised serious concerns about fairness and transparency, as it appears to undermine the democratic principles enshrined in the NDC Constitution. Furthermore, allegations of irregularities in previous constituency elections, including defiance of court injunctions and improper selection of branch executives, have exacerbated tensions within the party.
In light of these challenges, we respectfully request the following actions to be taken before the scheduled MMDCE interviews on Wednesday, April 2nd, 2025:
1. Immediate Intervention: We urge your office to mediate the disputes in Atiwa West and ensure that all applications, including Mr. Julius's, are fairly reviewed without interference from local executives.
2. Transparent Vetting Process: We request that the Regional Vetting Committee be directed to conduct a rigorous and impartial vetting process, ensuring that all candidates are assessed based on merit, competence, and adherence to constitutional requirements.
3. Resolution of Internal Conflicts: We recommend convening an emergency meeting with the NDC's national executives, including National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia and General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, to address the allegations against Mr. Amo and reaffirm the party's commitment to democratic principles.
4. Strengthening Grassroots Engagement: We propose enhanced communication and engagement with party members at the grassroots level to foster unity and rebuild trust within the constituency.
We believe that these measures are essential to restore credibility to the selection process and ensure a peaceful and successful election of an MMDCE in Atiwa West. Your timely intervention will not only resolve the current impasse but also set a precedent for addressing similar challenges across the country.
We thank you for your attention to this urgent matter and look forward to your swift action.
Yours faithfully,
Retired Senior Citizen
