Empowering Upper West: Women and Youth Coalition advocates for development
In a bid to champion the cause of development and progress in the Upper West Region, the Regional Women and Youth Coalition recently convened a groundbreaking Regional Development Forum.
Following this forum, the coalition presented a comprehensive communique to the esteemed Regional Minister, Hon. Charles Lwanga Puozuing Esq., marking a pivotal moment in the quest for positive change.
This dynamic coalition, comprised of various passionate groups including the Upper West Regional Youth Parliament, Young Female Influencers, Fulbe Youth Association of Ghana, and Upper West Queens Mothers Association, came together on February 22, 2025, fueled by the vision of the Heard Everywhere and Represented Daily (HEARD) project spearheaded by SAVE-Ghana in collaboration with NORSAAC.
The resolutions put forward by the coalition aimed at addressing critical development challenges in the region, with a strong emphasis on enhancing youth and women participation in local governance. They advocated for the reservation of quotas for youth, women, and marginalized groups in government appointments to ensure inclusive representation.
Highlighting the pressing issue of youth unemployment, the coalition urged for sustainable employment opportunities, particularly in the agricultural sector. They also underscored the importance of improving infrastructure, tackling drug and substance abuse, and addressing key social concerns such as sanitation practices, teenage pregnancy, and child marriage.
Upon receiving the communique, Minister Puozuing expressed his unwavering commitment to addressing the identified issues, acknowledging them as crucial for the region's progress. He reiterated the government's dedication to combatting drug abuse and outlined plans to prioritize infrastructure projects, including the vital Wa-Sawla-Bole road.
The Minister reassured the coalition of imminent measures to enhance security through the installation of streetlights in strategic locations, emphasizing the importance of creating a safe and conducive environment for economic activities to thrive.
As the region embarks on this transformative journey towards sustainable development, the collaboration between the Women and Youth Coalition and the government signifies a shared commitment to building a brighter future for all. The call for action resonates loud and clear, echoing the collective voice of a community determined to shape its destiny.
