Ghana Federation of Labour commends Dr. Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo for addressing pressing labour concerns
Dr Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo, Minister-Designate for Labour, Jobs, and Employment’s swift action to address pressing national labour concerns, has attracted wide commendation from the Labour Unions including the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL).
The minister-designate has fixed a tripartite meeting for Monday, February 3rd, with labour unions to resolve pressing labour concerns while pledging to prioritize collaboration between labour unions, employers, and other stakeholders to resolve grievances amicably.
Dr. Pelpuo has also reaffirmed his commitment to the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) 24-hour economy policy, which aims to extend economic activities beyond traditional working hours.
Speaking on the strategy adopted by the Minister Designate, Mr. Abraham Koomson, GFL Secretary-General described Dr. Pelpuo's decision to convene a tripartite meeting with labour unions as a demonstration of his proactive approach to resolving labour disputes.
Mr. Koomson explained that Dr. Pelpuo's swift action on labour issues is a significant endorsement of his commitment to addressing the concerns of Ghana's workforce.
“As the Minister-Designate for the Ministry of Labour, Jobs, and Employment, Dr. Pelpuo's leadership will be crucial in shaping the country's labour landscape and promoting industrial harmony,” Mr. Koomson stated.
The GFL Secretary General noted that the minister-designate has demonstrated total commitment, and the capacity to initiate and create the environment for engagement with stakeholders is a positive step toward fostering industrial harmony.
Mr. Koomson, who is a seasoned unionist, stressed, “The employment minister-designate has hit the ground running because a letter from him states that this coming Monday, there will be a tripartite meeting, and it shows he is serious about work, and that is what we are looking for.”
In addition to addressing labour disputes, Dr. Pelpuo reaffirmed his commitment to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) 24-hour economy policy, which aims to revolutionize Ghana’s labour landscape by extending economic activities beyond traditional working hours.
Mr. Koomson said the 24-hour economy policy proposal by the NDC will be a game changer, and they should start so that everybody can see that they are committed to making sure the policy is implemented as it is about job creation.
The GFL Secretary General stressed, “Where my focus is on the 24-hour, they shouldn’t play with it; they should start for everybody to see that they are committed to making sure that this policy is implemented as it is about job creation, and that is the area we workers are concerned about.”
The 24-hour policy, proposed by President John Dramani Mahama, seeks to create a three-shift system across various sectors, enabling industries to operate continuously throughout the day and night.
