Mahama appoints Edward Bawa as GNPC Acting CEO

Edward Abambire Bawa, Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC)

President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Edward Abambire Bawa as the Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), effective January 17, 2025.

This appointment aligns with Article 195(1) of the Constitution and Section 10(2) of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation Act, 1983 (P.N.D.C.L.64).

Edward Bawa, born on September 1, 1973, is the immediate past Member of Parliament for the Bongo Constituency in the Upper East Region, representing the National Democratic Congress.

He holds a Bachelor of Education in Chemistry from the University of Cape Coast and a Master of Business Administration in Business Finance from the University of Liverpool.

Bawa has previously served as the Head of Communication for the World Bank’s oil and gas capacity building project under the Ministry of Petroleum.

The GNPC, established in 1983, is the state agency responsible for the exploration, licensing, and distribution of petroleum-related activities in Ghana.

The corporation has played a pivotal role in the development of Ghana’s oil and gas industry, including the discovery and production of oil from the Jubilee fields.

In the official appointment letter, Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President, stated, “His Excellency John Dramani Mahama… has appointed you as the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation pending receipt of the required advice of the Honourable Minister for Energy, in consultation with the Public Services Commission.”
