Verily Ghana was on the verge of collapse: Reset is the best option

System Restore is a feature in Microsoft Windows that allows users to revert their computer's state to a previous point in time, which can be used to recover from system malfunctions or other problems.

Looking at the current state of this country inherited by President John Mahama, it suffices to say that the system is malfunctioning. After what the country endured over the past eight years, the immediate need is to restore the nation to its pre-2016 state to address these malfunctions. No wonder Ghanaians voted for a “Reset” instead of the deceitful “Upgrade,” because there was nothing to upgrade. Sadly, all the developmental progress Ghana achieved between 1992 and 2017 has been eroded under the immediate past Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government.

The unfortunate but undeniable truth is that the country has retrogressed by three decades under the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration. Due to the selfish actions of the government and its appointees, patriotism diminished among the populace, civil servants were silenced, public confidence hit its lowest point, and the youth were compelled to leave the country through perilous routes. Ironically, those responsible for this egregious mismanagement remained adamant, clinging to power to conceal the corruption perpetrated between 2017 and 2024.

This country was—and still is—akin to a patient in an intensive care unit, where the immediate priority is stabilization before beginning treatment. The NPP government mismanaged every sector of the country, leaving Ghana in dire need of a change in direction, yet they remained in denial. Good riddance.

Ghana’s current challenges demand a different type of leadership—one willing to take unconventional approaches, listen to divergent views, and engage with all stakeholders. It is commendable to hear President Mahama announce his intention to consult a broad spectrum of Ghanaians to identify and implement solutions to the challenges facing the country in sectors such as the economy, education, energy, and health. This is the right direction to take.

The December 7, 2024, elections were critical for Ghana's future. The decision Ghanaians made on that day indicates that the country can overcome its challenges.

It was both perplexing and disrespectful to see the same individuals who arrogantly and incompetently led us into crisis attempting to continue beyond 2024. If they had succeeded, Ghana would have become unbearable for its citizens. Over the past eight years, we have witnessed the highest rates of inflation, currency depreciation, national debt, and unemployment since 1992.

The 2024 elections provided an opportunity to choose leadership that would instill confidence, hope, and a renewed sense of patriotism among Ghanaians, leading to national development. This leadership must build a self-sustaining Ghana, uphold the rule of law, foster shared prosperity, safeguard democracy, protect citizens from abuse, and ensure access to essential life necessities for all.

Thank God Ghanaians opted for the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama and Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang to reset the country.
