Setting Traps for Mahama
The will of the people has prevailed—President John Dramani Mahama has been elected to lead Ghana once again. His swearing-in on the 7th will mark the dawn of a new era for our beloved country. Yet, as we prepare to rebuild and restore hope under Mahama's leadership, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is already laying traps to sabotage the incoming administration. Their strategy of destruction, evident in the recent devastating fire at Kantamanto Market, is nothing new. It is the same playbook they used prior to the 2016 elections, a testament to their desperation and failure.
During Mahama’s previous administration, his vision for market redevelopment was clear and transformative. He spearheaded the reconstruction of the Kumasi Central Market, the largest in West Africa, into a modern trading hub that would enhance the livelihoods of thousands of traders. Phases of the project were launched with visible progress, demonstrating his commitment to providing traders with safer, more conducive spaces for their businesses.
What did the NPP do when they assumed office? They inherited this transformational project and failed to continue it. For eight years, they neglected the Kumasi Central Market, leaving traders in unsafe and overcrowded conditions. Even more embarrassing, they couldn’t construct a single mini-market anywhere in the country to alleviate the challenges faced by traders. Their empty rhetoric and lack of action exposed their incompetence and disregard for the very people they claim to serve.
Now, in their usual fashion, they have resorted to sabotaging the incoming administration. The Kantamanto Market fire is a glaring example. This tragedy has displaced thousands of traders, destroyed goods worth millions, and left countless families in despair. Instead of using their time in office to implement preventive measures and provide traders with the infrastructure they need, the NPP has turned a blind eye to these pressing issues.
It is not lost on Ghanaians that these tactics are designed to set traps for the Mahama administration. The NPP hopes to paint a picture of chaos and dysfunction, just as they did in 2016, to undermine a leader who has consistently demonstrated competence, vision, and commitment.
But Ghanaians are not fooled. We remember how President Mahama initiated projects to transform markets and support traders. We remember his efforts to build a Ghana where every citizen, regardless of their background, could thrive. The contrast is clear: while Mahama builds, the NPP destroys.
On the 7th of this month, President Mahama will take office, and with him, a renewed sense of purpose and hope for Ghana’s future. The NPP’s traps will not hold us back. The Kumasi Central Market, once a symbol of Mahama’s vision, will once again become a beacon of progress. Other markets, including Kantamanto, will receive the attention they deserve under the leadership of a man who values the dignity and livelihoods of traders.
Ghana is ready to move forward. We have chosen a leader who builds, inspires, and transforms. The NPP’s desperation and sabotage will not derail our journey to greatness. Together, under Mahama’s leadership, we will rise above the challenges, rebuild our nation, and restore hope for all Ghanaians. Let us stand united and resolute, knowing that brighter days are ahead. The traps may be set, but the will of the people will always triumph.
