The Dust of Neglect: A Looming Health Crisis on the Mallam Cape Coast Highway?
As one traverses the Mallam Cape Coast highway, one is reminded of the alarming consequences of neglect and disregard for human life by some construction firms. The entire stretch of the highway, currently undergoing dualisation by a Chinese road construction firm, has been transformed into a massive construction zone, generating enormous amounts of dust as the harmattan season bites, which pose a significant threat to the health and well-being of nearby residents.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution, to which dust is a significant contributor, is responsible for an estimated 7 million premature deaths worldwide annually (WHO, 2024). In Ghana, the situation is equally dire, with a study by the Ghana Health Service revealing that respiratory diseases account for approximately 12.4% of all deaths in the country (GHS, 2024).
The dust emanating from the construction site is not merely an inconvenience; it is a ticking time bomb, waiting to unleash its devastating effects on the local population. Floors mopped in the morning are dust-laden by evening, and the fine particles seep into every nook and cranny, exacerbating respiratory ailments.
It is nothing short of appalling that the contractor, who would never dare to operate in such a manner in their native China, is allowed to do so in Ghana. This blatant disregard for human life is a stark reminder of the systemic inequalities that perpetuate environmental injustices in developing countries.
As we demand greater accountability from our leaders and the contractors responsible for this project, we must also acknowledge the resilience and adaptability of the Ghanaian people. We will not be silenced by the dust of neglect; we will rise above it, demanding a better future for ourselves and our children.
The time for action is now. We owe it to ourselves, our communities, and future generations to ensure that our environment is protected, and our health and well-being are prioritized.
