Christians advised to uphold moral excellence
Most Rev. Emmanuel Kofi Fianu, SVD, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Ho and Vice President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, has urged Christians to take an active role in saving the world from immorality.
According to Bishop Fianu, the world has lost its moral direction due to sin and is in constant need of redemption.
He made this call during the end-of-year Diocesan Pilgrimage to Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto at Kpando Agbenoxoe. The pilgrimage brought together clergy, religious, and lay faithful from across the diocese to mark the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary.
In his sermon, Bishop Fianu reflected on societal challenges and lamented how sin continues to distort humanity's moral compass. He pointed out that this distortion has led to the widespread acceptance of corruption, theft, and other vices. The Bishop expressed concern that sin has been repackaged as freedom and human liberty, resulting in a decline in moral values. He reminded Christians of their divine calling to holiness and the importance of trusting in God’s power to overcome sin.
Bishop Fianu emphasized the need for individuals to acknowledge their wrongdoing rather than shifting blame onto others. He referenced the story of Adam and Eve, highlighting how Adam’s attempt to blame Eve for his actions serves as a lesson in personal accountability.
The Bishop also strongly condemned the recent assault on three Franciscan Capuchin priests at St. Michael Parish in Kpassa. The priests were attacked by a group of youths who accused them of stealing equipment. Bishop Fianu expressed profound disappointment and sadness over the incident, which escalated into a physical altercation. He called on Christians to pray for peace, understanding, and reconciliation.
Concluding his sermon, Bishop Fianu urged Ghanaians to offer thanks to God for the peaceful conduct of the recently concluded elections. He encouraged the faithful to pray for Catholic lawmakers who were elected to Parliament, charging them to uphold their faith and demonstrate truthfulness and accountability in public service.
The occasion was graced by Hon. MPs-elect Joycelyn Tettey, Sebastian Deh, Worlanyo Tsekpo, and Richmond Kpotosu. The event, held under the theme “Help Raise Funds Towards the Building of a Hermitage,” also aimed to foster unity and solidarity among Catholics in the diocese while raising funds for the construction of the hermitage.
