Election 2024: NDC exploited Bawumia’s early concession to steal seats — Afenyo-Markin

Alexander Afenyo-Markin, leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus in Parliament, has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of exploiting Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s early concession speech to manipulate the outcome of parliamentary election in certain constituencies.

Shortly after the elections, Dr. Bawumia, the NPP flagbearer, held a press conference, graciously conceding defeat to John Mahama.

“He revealed that he had called the president-elect to congratulate him on his victory, even before the Electoral Commission officially declared the results.

However, Afenyo-Markin believes that this act of statesmanship inadvertently allowed the NDC to use violence to secure parliamentary seats.

“The violence with which the NDC used to snatch some of our seats was unprecedented,” Afenyo-Markin asserted. “They took advantage of Dr. Bawumia’s concession speech and went all out to unleash deliberate, intentional, and well-organized violence.

“While election-related violence is not new, this was on a different scale. To my dismay, some Members of Parliament, whom I deeply respect, were actively leading the violence.”

He specifically mentioned incidents at the Tema Central constituency, where he alleged that violence was orchestrated to secure a win for the NDC aspirant.
