A Bridge to Nowhere or a Gateway to Progress? How the NPP's Vision Turned the Flower Pot Flyover from Basic to Bold National Landmark

The Flower Pot Flyover project, as originally conceived and awarded by the John Mahama administration in 2016, comprised a modest 120-metre bridge spanning the Flower Pot roundabout and crossing the Accra-Tema Motorway. The cost of this project was estimated at GH¢69.5 million, designed to address traffic congestion issues in the area.

However, when the NPP assumed office, a comprehensive review of the project revealed that the initial plan was insufficient to address the long-standing traffic challenges faced by commuters in the area and the broader transport network. Rather than settling for a suboptimal solution, the NPP government undertook a significant redesign of the project, transforming it from a basic bridge into a modern flyover of national significance.

Key Features of the Redesigned Project:

1. Expanded Flyover: The original 120-metre bridge was replaced with a 1,022-metre flyover, integrating two expansive roundabouts and delivering seamless traffic flow.
2. Viaducts: The project includes an 802-metre dual carriageway viaduct surfaced with asphaltic concrete, ensuring durability and efficiency.
3. Additional Ramps: Two critical ramps were added:
   • A 140-metre ramp connecting Shiashie to Airport Hills.
   • An 80-metre ramp linking the viaduct to the motorway towards Tema.
4. Cost Adjustment: Despite the project's enhanced scope and the pressures of fluctuating exchange rates, the cost is GH¢700 million, reflecting value for money given the scope of work and long-term benefits.

This project exemplifies the NPP’s commitment to ambitious transformative infrastructure development.
