Obuasi basic school students empowered through guidance and coaching

Choosing the right course of study after Junior High School has long been a challenge for many students and their parents or guardians.

A lack of proper guidance often leads students to make decisions that do not align with their strengths, interests, or career aspirations.

Recognizing this, AngloGold Ashanti’s Obuasi Mine has introduced a comprehensive Academic Guidance and Personal Development Program as part of its 10-year Socio-Economic Development Plan (SEDP). The initiative aims to support students from primary six to Junior High School (JHS 3) in making informed academic and career choices.

The maiden edition of the program took place in October at Sanso M/A JHS in Obuasi, where students were introduced to strategies for selecting courses that align with their potential. Building on its success, AngloGold Ashanti has expanded the program to include additional public schools in the Obuasi East and Obuasi Municipalities.

During a session held at Jimiso Kakraba M/A, Esther Agyeiwaa Akoto, Social Development Officer at AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, explained the program's objective. She highlighted its focus on addressing challenges that hinder academic performance and personal growth among students. The initiative also aims to equip students with effective study skills, time management strategies, and organizational techniques.

The program is delivered through AngloGold Ashanti’s Employee Volunteer Programme (EVP), which encourages staff members to engage with and support local communities. Employees provide academic guidance and coaching, strengthening bonds with host communities while empowering students to take control of their educational and personal development journeys.

Speaking on the expected outcomes, Ms. Akoto expressed optimism that the intervention would improve students' academic performance, retention rates, and personal development, ultimately contributing to their overall well-being and success.

Joseph Nunoo, a circuit supervisor at the Obuasi East Municipal Education Directorate, underscored the importance of career guidance at the pre-senior high school level. He praised AngloGold Ashanti for the program, describing it as a transformative initiative that equips students with the tools to navigate their career paths successfully.

“In a world of abundant opportunities, proper coaching is essential. This program is a beacon of light, helping students make informed career decisions,” Mr. Nunoo remarked.

Participating students expressed their gratitude, noting that the program had broadened their understanding of time management and decision-making, which are crucial for their future academic and personal endeavors.

The career guidance program is one of many educational initiatives implemented by AngloGold Ashanti in Obuasi to improve educational quality and accessibility. Other projects include the construction of a modern nine-unit classroom block at Sanso, teacher upskill training, the provision of textbooks, the donation of sanitary pads to schoolgirls, and the construction of examination printing centers for the Obuasi East and Obuasi Municipalities.

These efforts reflect AngloGold Ashanti’s commitment to fostering a brighter future for students and the broader community.
