Govt to enhance nursing and midwifery education - Dr Hafez Adam Taher
The Director of Technical Coordination at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Hafez Adam Taher, has stated that the government will enhance nursing and midwifery education, leadership, and governance, which are essential components in achieving universal health coverage.
He said this at the 5th Annual Nursing and Midwifery Leaders and Managers Conference and the 4th Excellence Awards in Takoradi on the theme: “Empowering Nursing and Midwifery Leaders and Managers to Promote Quality Healthcare Delivery.”
Dr. Taher stressed that Ghana’s Nursing and Midwifery Strategic Plan and Services Framework for 2024-2028 aligns with the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Global Strategic Directions for Nursing and Midwifery.
According to him, Ghana’s strategic framework emphasises building a skilled and empowered workforce capable of delivering quality care across the nation.
On his part, the Board Chairman of the University of Ghana Medical Centre, Dr Anarfi Asamoah-Baah, emphasised the necessity of a comprehensive approach to address challenges within healthcare staffing, training and standards.
“Quality healthcare depends on quality health workers. We need a holistic approach, not fragmented pilot programmes to elevate the standards of healthcare professionals,” he said.
He called for support in training, supervision and transparent systems to make nursing and midwifery professions attractive and impactful career choices.
The Chief Director of the Ministry, Alhaji Hafiz Adam, noted that the conference is not only a forum for celebrating achievements but also a platform for assessing the performance of nursing and midwifery professionals.
He noted that leaders and managers play important roles in improving healthcare quality.
“Leadership and accountability are essential to achieving better health outcomes for all,” he added.
He noted that the Ministry would uphold high standards in nursing and midwifery to meet the growing demands of healthcare delivery in Ghana.
The Director of Nursing and Midwifery at the Ministry of Health, Dr Barnabas K. Yeboah, urged the government to consider appointing nurses and midwives as CEOs of teaching hospitals, Regional Directors of Health Services and other leadership roles in the healthcare sector.
He called for the introduction of incentives for nurses and midwives working in deprived communities and the establishment of a research fund to support their work.
The 5th Nursing and Midwifery Leaders and Managers Conference, alongside the 4th Excellence Awards is to strengthen Ghana's healthcare system by reinforcing the commitment of nurses and midwives to deliver high-quality healthcare. It provides a forum for exchanging ideas, recognizing excellence and setting strategic priorities for the future of nursing and midwifery leadership in the country.
