NCCE holds maiden inter-house debate at Nifa SHS in Okere District

The Eastern Regional Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) organized its maiden inter-house debate at Nifa Senior High School in the Okere District to mark International Democracy Day.

The debate was centered on the topic: "Consequences of Misinformation vs. Disinformation (Fake News): A Threat to National Democracy."

The NCCE explained that the debate aimed to raise awareness among the youth about the dangers of fake news, which can incite violence and undermine peaceful elections. Four houses participated, with Otutu Ababio House emerging victorious, scoring 171 points. They were followed by Gyeke Darko House with 138 points, Air Marshall Otu House with 136 points, and Opare Baidoo House with 134 points.

The event also formed part of the NCCE's Inter-Party Dialogue Committee (IPDC) program. The occasion was graced by dignitaries, including Nana Asamoah Duodu, Awukugua Tufuhene; Ms. Cornelia Kpelle, headmistress of Nifa SHS; representatives from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the Okere District Electoral Commission, and the District Police Command.

Ms. Kpelle commended the NCCE for the initiative and urged the students to maintain discipline in the run-up to the December elections. Ms. Ophelia Nana Yaa Ankrah, NCCE Eastern Regional Director, who led the monitoring team, cautioned the students against spreading false information, emphasizing that fake news can destabilize the country. She encouraged the students to promote peace before, during, and after the elections.

The NCCE Okere District Director, Mr. Godfried Alexander Bonney, highlighted the importance of empowering the youth to prioritize civic responsibilities for the nation’s welfare. He reiterated that the debate aimed to help students critically understand fake news, build confidence, and develop essential research and time management skills.
