Virgin Atlantic Airlines to relaunch London-Accra-London flights in May 2025
Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has announced that Virgin Atlantic Airlines will resume flights to Ghana starting May 2025.
In a statement dated September 3, GACL Managing Director Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare welcomed Virgin Atlantic's decision, saying it will be the 25th international airline operating at Kotoka International Airport.
"We are thrilled to welcome Virgin Atlantic back to Ghana, which will become the 25th international airline to operate at Kotoka International Airport," said Ms. Afriyie Opare.
“We look forward to collaborating with Virgin Atlantic to ensure seamless launch of their operations and continued facilitation at the airport,” the statement added.
Ms. Opare noted that with more airlines operating out of Ghana, GACL will utilize Terminal 2 at Kotoka Airport to increase capacity and ease congestion at the busier Terminal 3. This is expected to enhance the passenger experience.
Virgin Atlantic will operate daily flights between London Heathrow and Accra on Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.
The airline's return underscores growing confidence in Ghana's aviation industry as the country aims to establish itself as a leading aviation hub in West Africa.
The resumption of Virgin Atlantic flights is a major boost for connectivity between Ghana and international destinations.
It will provide more options for travellers and suppor Ghana's economic growth through improved transport links.
In September 2013, Virgin Atlantic announced that it was suspending flights on the London-Accra-London route after three years of service.
The airline cited several reasons for the decision, including the "exceptionally high price of fuel in Ghana," which impacted costs.
Virgin Atlantic also pointed to broader economic factors and challenges securing morning arrival slots at London airports due to capacity constraints.
