Government releases GHS50 million to WAEC for BECE, WASSCE exams
The Government of Ghana has released GHS50 million to the West African Examination Council (WAEC) for the conduct of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
In a press statement released on August 29, the Ministry of Education announced the financial disbursement, saying it reaffirms the government's commitment to fulfilling its obligations to WAEC.
"This disbursement reaffirms the Government's commitment to fulfilling its financial obligations to WAEC, ensuring that the Council's operations continue without interruption," said Kwasi Kwarteng, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Education.
A total of 569,095 candidates, comprising 282,648 males and 286,447 females from 19,506 schools sat for 2024
BECE in July.
In all, 460,611 candidates, made up of 212,954 males and 247,657 females from 1,003 schools, are sitting the examination at 1,000 centres across the country which began last week.
In a press conference last week, Ranking Member on Parliament’s Education Committee, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, claimed the BECE is still not being marked due to debts owed the examination body by government.
