‘Student Loan Trust Fund Plus will help tertiary students continue after level 100 fee waiver’ — Fifi Kwetey
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced plans to rejuvenate and expand the Student Loan Trust Fund Plus (SLTF) to ensure continuing tertiary students can access financing to complete their education without interruptions.
NDC General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey revealed this in a Facebook post on Monday, August 19, outlining the party's commitment to support tertiary students beyond the first year of study.
The NDC has pledged to absorb fees for all level 100 students in public universities, colleges of education, nursing training colleges and technical universities from January 2025.
According to Fifi Kwetey, this removes financial barriers preventing deserving secondary school graduates from pursuing tertiary education.
He further added that the policy aims to prioritize Ghana's youth and ensure they have opportunities to study and succeed.
The estimated costs of GHS275-GHS290 million will be funded through cuts in wasteful government expenditures, particularly from the Office of Government Machinery.
"We understand that the transition into tertiary education is often the most challenging time for both students and their families. The burden of paying academic fees can be overwhelming, which is why John Mahama has committed to fully absorbing these costs for first-year students, providing much-needed relief at this critical juncture. But our support doesn't end there.
“For those concerned about the financial journey beyond the first year, we have plans to rejuvenate and expand the Student Loan Trust Fund Plus (SLTF). This initiative will ensure that every continuing student has seamless access to the financial resources they need to continue their education without interruption," Fifi Kwetey stated.
