NCCE holds police-community dialogue session to combat violence extremism

The National Commission for Civic Education has launched a Police-Community Dialogue Session in the Punyoro community, located in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality of the Upper East Region with the aim to combat violent extremism.

The event, themed "Police and Community Dialogue Session on Preventing and Containing Violent Extremism," is funded by the European Union (EU).

Speaking at the durbar on Tuesday, Madam Felicia Adjongba emphasized that the session's goal is to foster trust and cooperation between the Ghana Police Service and the Punyoro community, with a focus on combating violent extremism.

"This platform, as a key part of the EU-sponsored initiative, highlights our commitment to creating an inclusive space for open dialogue, defusing tensions, and building trust to enhance police-community relations and confidence," she said.

Madam Adjongba highlighted that violent extremism poses a complex threat not only to neighboring countries but also to Ghana. She stressed the importance of collaboration to prevent such threats in Ghana, particularly given the porous borders in the northern regions, which could serve as entry points for extremists and weapons. She underscored the need for proactive and vigilant measures to safeguard the country's peace and security, especially as the general election approaches.

Mr. Sulemana Maleeq, an Immigration Officer, educated the community members on how extremist groups often exploit conflicts and misunderstandings to further their agendas. He advised the community to be mindful of their language and to avoid minor conflicts, particularly during the upcoming general election. He also urged them to report any suspicious individuals to the appropriate authorities.

Superintendent Samuel A. Boah, the Municipal Assistant Crime Officer, highlighted the importance of community policing and stressed that fighting crime is a shared responsibility.
