Ghana’s Democracy in Peril: Urgent Call to Action for 2024 Elections
As Ghana approaches the December 2024 elections, the integrity of our democratic process is under unprecedented threat. High-ranking government officials are making ominous statements that jeopardize the very fabric of our democracy, while the electoral commission, entrusted with ensuring free and fair elections, is now mired in controversy. This dangerous combination demands immediate and resolute action from every Ghanaian citizen.
Alarming Statements from Political Leaders
The president has repeatedly asserted that his administration will not hand over power, insisting his party will retain control. This rhetoric is deeply troubling, especially as independent polls and surveys indicate a likely victory for the opposition. Such statements undermine the democratic process and suggest a willingness to ignore the will of the people.
Hon. Bryan Acheampong, the minister of state for agriculture, has echoed these undemocratic sentiments, facing no consequences for his dangerous assertions. It appears there is a concerted effort to install the vice president as the next leader, likely to shield the current administration from accountability for its rampant corruption and mismanagement.
The Electoral Commission’s Compromise
The neutrality of our electoral commission is in serious question. The commissioner and her two deputies, all appointed by the president, have demonstrated a clear bias towards the ruling party. The commissioner’s prior allegiance to the president, coupled with her deputies’ backgrounds as party executives, casts a shadow over their ability to conduct fair elections.
The decision to limit voter registration to district headquarters, rather than electoral areas, severely restricts access for many voters, particularly those in opposition strongholds. This is not merely an oversight but a calculated move to disenfranchise segments of the electorate. The dismissal of recommendations from the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) further underscores the commission’s disregard for a fair electoral process.
Even more troubling is the unexplained disappearance of Voter Biometric Verification Devices from the commission’s headquarters, a scandal exposed by the opposition. This incident, shrouded in mystery and inaction, raises serious concerns about the integrity of the upcoming elections.
Abuse of Security Forces
The deployment of security agencies to intimidate and suppress opposition supporters is another tactic threatening the electoral process. This misuse of power is a blatant attempt to skew the election results in favor of the ruling party, undermining the democratic rights of the people.
Judicial Complicity
The judiciary’s role in this crisis cannot be ignored. The 2020 elections exposed significant flaws, with the commission unable to provide definitive results and the commissioner avoiding accountability through legal technicalities. This complicity further erodes public trust in the fairness and integrity of our electoral process.
An Urgent Appeal to Ghanaians
The future of Ghana’s democracy hinges on the actions we take now. Every Ghanaian must exercise their right to vote, choosing their preferred candidate without fear. Vigilance is crucial: protect your vote, monitor the electoral process, and ensure that the true will of the people is respected.
Our country stands at a crossroads. We must rise to the occasion, demanding accountability and transparency. The integrity of our elections is not negotiable. By uniting and standing firm, we can protect our democracy and secure a prosperous future for Ghana.
This is a call to action for every Ghanaian. Let us vote, protect our votes, and ensure that our nation remains a beacon of democracy and justice. Our future depends on it.
