GNFS targets 50% reduction on bushfire by next year in Volta Region

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) Volta Regional Command has committed to reducing the frequency of fire outbreaks in the area by 50% by the second quarter of next year, calling on everyone to contribute to this objective.

The command reported approximately 48 bushfires in the region so far this year and highlighted that fire outbreaks consume 3% of the country's annual GDP. Establishing fire posts and recruiting fire volunteers are seen as crucial steps toward mitigating these incidents at the community and national levels.

These remarks were made during the commissioning of a new fire station at Adaklu Ahunda, the second fire post in the Adaklu District of the Volta Region, by Mr. Joy Ameyibor Ayim, the Assistant Chief Fire Officer (ACFO 1) and regional commander of the GNFS.

"The regional command has recorded 48 bushfires this year; our goal is to reduce this by 50% by this time next year, and this is something we can accomplish if all hands are on deck," Ayim stated.

Reflecting on his earlier promise during the inauguration of fire volunteers at Adaklu Ahunda, the Commander praised the community's chief and residents for their efforts in making his vision a reality.

"I'm thrilled to be here today and take part in the Adaklu fire post commissioning. When we were in this town on September 22, 2022, less than two years ago, it was for the inauguration of the town's fire volunteers squad. I said, 'It would be a delight to come back here the following year to commission a fully-fledged fire station in addition to that of Adaklu Waya.' Mamawo and Togbewo, you have delivered," he emphasized.

The commander expressed hope that by this time next year, they would be commissioning a new fire tender, thereby elevating the status of the station. "It is my prayer that by next year, when the government brings more fire tenders, we will be here to commission a new fire tender, thus elevating the status of this station to a fire station. I know the appliance bay is already there, so we only need a fire tender," he added.

ACFO 1 applauded the District Chief Executive, the chiefs, and the elders, urging the community, the district assembly, and philanthropists to support the fire service staff in achieving comprehensive success. He also charged the staff to be disciplined and dedicated to protecting lives and properties.

The chief of Adaklu Ahunda, Togbe Asamoah V, underscored the importance of the fire post, given the village's location along a route frequently used by gasoline tankers and other hazardous goods. He also requested the Adaklu District Chief Executive's assistance in constructing a garage for the firefighter assigned to the Ahunda Fire Post.
