‘I’m used to the propaganda tactics now’ — Cheddar reacts to allegations of owing GRA
Nana Kwame Bediako, popularly known as Cheddar, has reacted to allegations of owing the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
He describes it as propaganda tactics aimed at discrediting him.
Earlier this year, Cheddar was embroiled in a tax evasion scandal when documents purportedly from the GRA suggested that he had failed to meet essential financial obligations, with reported tax evasion totaling over GHC7 million.
According to reports from the Ghanaian Times newspaper and Asaase Radio, the GRA documents revealed instances of non-compliance with tax regulations, including neglecting to file personal income tax returns.
While the allegations raised serious questions about Cheddar's transparency and financial responsibility, especially in light of his presidential aspirations, he reacted to the claims during an interview with Berla Mundi on TV3’s New Day Show on Monday, March 25, 2024.
Cheddar dismissed the allegations as basic political propaganda tactics and indicated that he had become accustomed to such attempts to discredit him.
“I don’t think the GRA said it, because I was reading it and they were saying that someone that is investigating things some time ago in 2013 said I did not make some payments and all.
“But I think it’s just basic political propaganda. I’m used to it now,” he said.
He further highlighted the challenges faced during his political journey, including cancellations and disruptions to his plans, suggesting that the allegations were part of a broader effort to undermine his credibility.
He stated, “Before my announcement, there was a convention, there were cancellations, and that…even on our tour, there are appointments and places that have been booked but they come and say that cancel it and all.”
Despite the allegations, Cheddar emphasized his commitment to serving the people of Ghana stating, “The point I’m trying to make is that the average Ghanaian is suffering.
“I might be a young successful man but it’s not fun because there is so much that I’m paying - from EPA to taxes to SSNIT to that, and yet we still have problems with it."
