Independence Day: ‘Ghana today not the one our forefathers sacrificed for’ — Mahama
Former President John Mahama on Ghana's Independence Day celebration asserted that the current state of the country is far from what the founders of Ghana sacrificed for.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, March 6, marking the 67th anniversary of Ghana's independence from British colonial rule, Mahama said "this is undoubtedly not the Ghana we want or the country our forefathers sacrificed their lives for."
The former President, who is seeking to regain the presidency for the opposition National Democratic Congress in 2024, compared the times when the colonial authorities "gunned down our people" and today's leaders "who preside over the murder of innocent civilians who stepped out to vote and strengthen our democracy."
Mahama lamented that high unemployment, a struggling economy, and rampant corruption have left Ghanaians poorer despite gaining independence over six decades ago.
He added, "We cannot turn a blind eye to the stark similarity between a colonial power that gunned down our people and today’s leaders who preside over the murder of innocent civilians who stepped out to vote and strengthen our democracy."
The former President called on Ghanaians to hold onto hope and work towards building a better country envisioned by the founding fathers like Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
