We’ve not introduced new Electronic Cargo Transit system; ignore fake letter — Finance Ministry

Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta

The Ministry of Finance has refuted a “fake” letter circulating among shipping agents about the introduction of a new Electronic Cargo Transit system.

In a press statement released on Tuesday, October 31, the Ministry said the letter claiming that shipments to Ghana will require an Electronic Cargo Tracking Number (ECTN/SPN) starting from 15 September is "fake and should be ignored."

The “fake” letter alleged that shipments to Ghana, including transit cargo, must obtain an ECTN from Antaser Afrique BVBA for verification starting 15 September 2023. Otherwise, cargo would not clear customs without a valid ECTN.

"The Ministry wishes to inform all shippers and stakeholders that the letter and its content are fake and should be ignored.

"We thank all stakeholders who alerted us and made enquiries and wish to assure them that, as is done with all policies, extensive consultation will be done with relevant stakeholders whenever government wishes to introduce a new policy or tax," the Ministry's statement noted.

The public is urged to contact the Ministry to verify any new directives on port operations and cargo clearance procedures before acting.
