#JustResign: Military affirms commitment to safeguarding protesters ahead of December demo against Akufo-Addo — Democracy Hub
The Ghana Armed Forces has reiterated its dedication to safeguarding civilians' right to peaceful protest, according to organizers of the upcoming #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration.
Representatives from Democracy Hub, the group organizing the December protest, met in closed doors with the Chief of Defence Staff and other senior military officials on Wednesday.
"During the course of the discussion, both parties engaged in a candid and open dialogue, addressing various important aspects," said a statement from Democracy Hub.
The statement further noted, "'They affirmed that this fundamental right is an integral and non-negotiable element of our democratic journey.'"
Democracy Hub revealed the meeting was "productive" and lasted two hours, indicating, "We received assurances from the Ghana Armed Forces regarding their unwavering belief in the sanctity of the freedom of assembly.”
The December month-long protest will call on the government to address rising cost of living and corruption concerns as well as seek the resignation of President Akufo-Addo.
Organizers say the meeting was intended to recognize the military as partners and reaffirm a "mutual commitment to improving and safeguarding Ghana's democracy."
The statement said the groups will continue "peaceful and constructive dialogue" to advocate for positive change and ensure Ghana's democracy grows stronger.
