God didn't really create us Africans in his own image, Did he?
Black Africans perish in the Mediterranean Sea today as we did in the Atlantic Ocean during the days of slavery. Did I hear the preacherman say God created us in his own image, really? Did God create we Africans in his own image as well?
In equal measure of anger, sadness, and shame, I will turn my eyes away from the TV screen any time Aljazeera starts talking about the African migrants and the Mediterranean Sea. The sight of hungry, rugged and tired looking African migrants, now stranded in no man's land between Tunisia and Libya. Even though I take my gaze away from the tele, I can still hear the Aljazeera correspondent's report. Some of these abandoned humans, some of the women are pregnant, some women have babies tied with a piece of cloth behind their backs, the African way of carrying babies by mothers. The whole story, whether listening or watching, is too touching and humiliating to bear.
Since the senseless overthrow of Ghadafi in the year 2011 AD, African migrants have sailed from the shores of Libya to their deaths in the Mediterranean Sea in their thousands. One black American friend of mine recently asked me quizzically, "Isn't what is happening to African migrants in the Mediterranean the same as during the days of slavery? When chained slaves were left to sink with the ship, in their thousands?"
So I said since 2011 this sad situation has been going on, all on the blind side of the AU, the ecowas, the useless regional bodies in Africa, and the very corrupt and insincere leaders in Africa. All or most of our current day leaders are busy getting rich and in a hurry hiding their ill-gotten moneys in banks in Zurich, in Barcelona, in Berlin, in Belfast, in offshore banks of the Caribbean, in London and in New York, just far away from the Africa continent. They are too busy stealing and selling the continent to the highest bidder. Too busy to think about suffering African citizens.
With so many youths fleeing from their homelands and consequently dying unnecessarily, it looks like the minimum amount of concern comes from European do-gooders(volunteers, charities). Charities mostly from the West side of Europe are themselves being vilified by their fellow Europeans mostly from the East side of Europe. Charities have become unpopular just for helping migrants get to European shores safely.
European politics and politicians are also finding ways and means to stop migrants from taking on such perilous journeys. The only group of people who do not care about Africa migrants that much are African leaders. Africa's politics and politicians are a disappointment. They are a disgrace to humanity. This has made me think about the preacherman's words from the holy books that " God made us in his own image " In our case as Africans, what sort of image is that. When was the last time you heard the AU discuss African brain drain and manpower drain issues. When was the last time the Africa Union had a summit on migrants issues or standard of living or unemployment issues on the Black continent. Think about it.
