Kumawu By-election — Ablakwa turns polling agent for NDC candidate
The Kumawu by-election, which is taking place today, May 23 has become a hot contest with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) vowing to win the seat for the first time since 1996.
The by-election was necessitated by the death of the incumbent MP, Mr. Philip Basoa earlier this year.
The Electoral Commission (EC) is currently overseeing the exercise to replace the late MP.
The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has put forward Ernest Yaw Anim as its candidate, while the NDC is pulling forces for Akwasi Amankwah.
There are also two independent candidates in the race, both with the name Kwaku Duah.
In a post shared on social media, the Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, was seen acting as a polling agent for the NDC in the by-election.
In a tweet, he expressed his pride in serving as a polling agent for the NDC, saying, "A Proud Polling Agent for the Great NDC in today’s Kumawu by-election. For God and Country."
The presence of Okudzeto Ablakwa at the polling station is seen as a boost for the NDC, as he is a popular and influential figure in Ghanaian politics.
His participation in the by-election is likely to energize the NDC's supporters and bolster their confidence in their chances of winning the seat.
The Kumawu by-election is being closely watched by political observers, as it is seen as a test of the popularity of the ruling NPP and the opposition NDC ahead of the 2024 general elections, despite its being a stronghold for the ruling party.
The NDC is hoping to capitalize on the people's dissatisfaction in the government's handling of the economy and other issues to win the seat and build momentum ahead of the next polls.
