Assin North by-election: We're ready to match NPP boot for boot, it will be a ‘do or die’ affair — NDC Chairman

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) branch in Assin North Constituency has strongly warned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) not to use any foul means in the upcoming by-election in the constituency to annex the seat.

Mr. Felix Benefo, the NDC's constituency chairman claims the NPP is allegedly plotting evil in the constituency just as it did in the 2020 general elections.

“We are sounding warning to them that if they try to unleash violence as they did in the 7th December 2020 elections, by spoiling our MP’s car by using state securities, we shall retaliate squarely,” Mr Benefo told journalists at a press conference on Friday, May 19.

He added, “Moreover, we are ready to match them boot for boot, and it will be a ‘do or die’ affair in a possible bye-election in Assin North.”

His comment follows a ruling by the Supreme Court on May 17 directing Parliament to remove James Gyakye Quayson's name from its records.

According to the court, Mr. James Gyakye Quayson violated Article 94(2)(a) of the 1992 Constitution by owing allegiance to Canada.

“In our view, the ruling is wicked, lacks common sense and is not developmental-oriented,” the Constituency Chairman stated.

According to him, "The deposition of the Assin North MP was allegedly orchestrated by individuals like Assin Central MP Ken Ohene Agyapong."

He stressed that the party will put in a fight for Mr. James Gyakye Quayson to win back the seat stripped by the Supreme Court.

“We are solidly behind you (Mr. James Gyakye Quayson) in these turbulent times, and we wish to assure you that you remain our surest bet, and for that matter, we shall always at all times rally behind you to work extra harder to maintain you in a possible by-election,” he emphasised.
